What is the best overall choke for Sporting Clay Shooting? What do you use and why. I've tried to find something somewhere that gives me an idea but it's all over the board from what I can read. Out of the box, I would probably recommend Improved Cylinder (IC) & Modified (Mod). I used a Briley extended Mod choke in my 20ga 390 last weekend and tied my best on sporting clays, using 7.5 shot. The breaks were better than with LM and I seemed to hit more. I dug out my pattern paper from my Beretta 686 12ga with the factory Optima HP chokes where I shot several at 25 yards - best I could do, indoors.

My general rule of thumb for edge-on or slightly turned birds is Skeet choke and #9s to 20 yards, Light Modified and #8s from 20~35 yards, Full and #7-1/2s from 35 yards out. I agree with the above that the best fixed choke combo would be 20 and 24. Although there aren't many sporting targets you can't break with .020 and very few Fitasc targets either. Certainly didn't see any at Nationals or Wotkd Fitasc in France. I still think most of use shoot too much choke for most sporting targets.
