The UIM(upper intake manifold) gasket is the one between the LIM and UIM. The 2.8/3.1 V6 engines are notorious for LIM gasket failure. In a nut shell most GM V-engines have LIM gasket issues. GM just went a little cheap on the gasket design. The UIM gasket is not the issue so much on the 3800 seriesII as it is the UIM plenum itself that fails.

I replaced the LIM gaskets on my Buick at 66k miles. Even at that low mileage, they were estimated by folks very knowledgeable about 3800 V6's to be a month away from failure. If the 3500 and 3900 are related to the 3100/3400 V6's, I'm not surprised. The 3400, while a basically all right engine, had a lot of gasket issues.
